Rocky Mountain Log Homes received three national homebuilding awards in the 2012 Jerry Rouleau Awards for excellence in marketing and home design, presented by the Building Systems Councils and the Log Homes Council.

The Hamilton-based log home builder received the excellence in home design award for log homes larger than 4,000 square feet. Its winning entry was the Tunken Log Home, which has a total living area of 6,582 square feet.

That award, and two for excellence in marketing, will be presented at the 2012 National Association of Home Builders Show on Feb. 6 in Orlando, Fla. The marketing campaigns were the work of Missoula's Spiker Communications.

"Each year, the BSC honors industry leaders through its marketing and home design awards program. Receiving one of these prestigious awards not only elevates the winning company's stature, but also enables them to receive national attention for their achievements," said 2011 BSC chairman Harry Junk, a leading figure in the concrete building materials industry.

Jim Schueler, president of Rocky Mountain Log Homes, was personally honored.

"Jerry Rouleau was a great friend of mine for over 25 years and I am honored that Rocky has won three of the awards that are named after him. The industry misses him greatly," he said.

Rouleau was a marketing authority and longtime advocate of the systems-built industry who died in 2011.

The Tunken Log Home is an extraordinary handcrafted log home, Schueler said. It was designed by Kibo Group Architecture, and is located in the Bitterroot Valley.

One of the main features that make the Tunken home architecturally unique is the log profile. From the outside, visitors expect to enter a standard, round-log home. Surprisingly, the inside walls of the home are flat hewn.

The transition from the flat to the round log profile in the corners was created by saddle-notching the corners instead of dovetailing them. Arched, hammer-beam trusses embedded into timber framing, as well as round-log column supports, are throughout the home.

Stonework is artistically incorporated inside the home at arched doorways and wall areas. The stairs are made from reclaimed Douglas fir and the treads are furniture-fit dovetails set into the stringer housings.

Natural tones were captured in the log structure and accented with bold splashes of colors in materials such as Van Gogh granite countertops and deep blue upholstery. Each plumbing fixture and chair was carefully selected to complement the other elements of the home to create a unique living experience.

Providing privacy and intimacy, the master suite is located on the main level of the home while the guest bedroom and bunkroom are located at the opposite end of the home above the garage.

An exterior fireplace adds quiet ambiance to cool evenings, while a swing is positioned to capitalize on the mountain views. As a rustic touch, the rafters of the pergola housing the swing are unpeeled, small-diameter logs.

Rocky Mountain Log Homes is one of the most well-known log home builders nationwide, and has been for more than three decades.

Its state-of-the-art computerized and robotized production lines make it possible to produce precision-milled timber and joinery, and to precut every detail of a house with pinpoint accuracy. The company offers a complete range of home styles, including automated Swedish-cope, handcrafted, dovetail, log siding, natural accent, as well as log components and accents.

Rocky is the only log home industry member that has a Society of American Foresters Certified Forester on staff. From its state-of-the-art precision milling equipment to its recycling practices, the company works hard to have less impact on the environment while contributing to ecological sustainability.
